Holy Spirit nun found dead in waste tank

A Catholic nun was found dead in a waste-water tank today in Thiruvananthapuram in the southern Indian state of Kerala, according to a police official.
P. Chandrasekharan, an additional director general of police, said the body of Sister Mary Ancy was discovered in the tank at the Holy Spirit Convent, where she lived.
He said two concrete slabs covering the tank had been removed and that a case of unnatural death had been registered for investigation.
The 48-year-old nun was a teacher in Holy Cross lower primary school in Palapoor, run by the Holy Spirit sisters.
Authorities at the convent, which operates under the supervision of Thriuvananthapuram’s Latin archdiocese, were not available for comment today.
According to the police report, nine nuns residing in the convent last saw the deceased at dinner about 9pm yesterday, after which they retired to their rooms.
This morning at 5am, the report continued, a nun staying in an adjacent room tried to wake Sister Mary but she was not in her room.
Residents living near the convent later found her body inside the tank at about 7:30am, the report stated.
Sister Mary reportedly suffered from severe allergies, and burn marks were found on her skin, according to the report.
She hailed from Kerala’s Kottayam district and had joined the convent in 1980.

Thiruvananthapuram: A nun was found dead on Monday morning inside a water tank at the convent where she lived in Kerala, police said.
Sister Mary Ancy, 45, was found dead at the Holy Spiritual Centre, located near the famed tourist destination of Kovalam, they said.
Her body was discovered by the inmates of the convent, where Ancy lived with eight other nuns.
Police suspect foul play because the slabs that covered the water tank were found displaced.
A preliminary autopsy report said that the victim was conscious at the time of drowning. It ruled out sexual assault. All the inmates of the convent and the priests attached to the church that runs the convent were tight-lipped on the episode.
Ancy was from Kottayam and had been living in the convent for the past two decades. She was a teacher at the school run by the convent. After the incident her body was moved to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College where the autopsy was conducted.
“A case of unnatural death has been registered and it is too premature to come to any conclusions as detailed investigations are going on,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Ramesh Babu.
Allergy
Police sources said Ancy had been suffering from an allergy and had not been sleeping properly for the past four days due to the ailment. This case comes at a time when the trial in the 1992 Sister Abhaya murder case is progressing after two Christian priests and a nun were named accused. Abhaya was found dead in her convent at Kottayam.
