CHENNAI: In a sensational written complaint to the police, a recently married 19-year-old woman from Tirunelveli on Thursday alleged that her rich and influential father was in the process of striking a `10-lakh deal with henchmen to finish off her husband, as she had tied the knot with him against the family’s wishes.

It was a case of ‘rich girl falling in love with a poor guy,’ when Paulin Meeha married her cousin S Ponraj, a civil engineer residing at Mogappair, in a church ceremony at Royapuram on March 31. Her prosperous father Manuvel did not approve. He was owner of a big company in Dubai, which he had left under the management of his son, while Ponraj, his elder sister’s son, hailed from an impoverished background. The entire family, including Manuvel’s brother, Sasi, opposed the marriage. Fearing violent reprisals the young couple filed a petition at J J Nagar police station on April 1.

Her father and his henchmen immediately descended on the police station, the complaint said, and after a lot of wrangling, her father submitted a written statement to the police disowning her. Since then, her father made several attempts to kill her, her husband and his brothers, Paulin claimed.

Things took a serious turn when two policemen from Tirunelveli, accompanied by three henchmen, beat up Ponraj and arrested him on July 7. “They handcuffed my son, bundled him into a vehicle and took off,” Ponraj’s mother S Rani told Express.

The Tirunelveli police allegedly filed a false complaint against Ponraj and put him behind bars. Paulin alleged that her father offered Rs 10 lakh bribe to her lawyer. Further, her cousin also alerted her that Manuvel was plotting to kill her husband and was in the process of striking a Rs 10-lakh deal with henchmen.

Accompanied by human rights activists, her husband and mother-in-law, Paulin Meeha arrived at the City Police Commissionerate on Thursday and lodged a written complaint, pleading for police protection and demanding action against those responsible for filing a false complaint against her husband.

City Commissioner of Police (in charge) Sanjay Arora forwarded the complaint to Thirumangalam police, ordering them to act immediately on the complaint.
